Microsoft has clarified its figures relating to the number of Xbox 360s sold in the US, in the wake of some confusion over comparisons to last night’s year-end NPD numbers.
The year-end NPD results were released last night, with Xbox 360 reported to have sold 1.31M units in the US for December.
Microsoft sent out a mailer in response to these figures, claiming to have sold 10M units.
Today, we received clarification, stating that the 10M figure should have been listed as a global figure, not a strictly US figure.
“In 2009, Xbox 360 console sales topped 10 million units globally, with more than 1.3 million sold in the U.S. in December, contributing to a worldwide Xbox 360 install base of 39 million,” read the statement.
“Previously we had unintentionally indicated Xbox 360 sold 10 million units in the U.S., when in fact this is a global number. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused”.
Mistake aside, MS had a banner year in 2009, with $4.8 billion spent on 360 hardware, software or accessories, with $1.1 billion in sales spent during December, and over $2.7 billion spent on 360 software during the year.
