Laura Nabs Exclusive Interview With Shamu
Laura: Hello Shamu, thank you for doing this on such a sad day.
Shamu: First of all it is pronounced SHAH-mu. Let’s get that straight.
L: Okay, sorry. So, a whale killed his trainer in Florida. Are you surprised?
S: Um, Laura, we are called KILLER whales. Do the math.
L: I see. Do you know the killer?
S: Alleged killer you mean?
L: Yes. Do you know him?
S: I do. His name is Tilikum. We are like brothers, but not actually brothers.
L: I understand this is not the first time he has killed.
S: Allegedly killed.
L: Yes. There was allegedly another trainer drowned by Tilikum in 1991.
S: Okay, yes, he did that.
L: And what about... Excuse me! I'm trying to conduct an interview here!
S: Oh, sorry. Go ahead.
L: And what about the incident in 1999? The body of a naked man was found laying across Tilikum’s back.
S: Naked body on his back, yes, it’s coming back to me… Yes. He killed that guy. But there is a longer story associated with that particular tale which I am not at liberty to tell you. I am sure you understand.
L: I do. Is there anything else you would like to say at this time?
S: Yes. This is a tragedy on many levels. My heart goes out to the family of the alleged victim. But more importantly, my show was cancelled today in San Diego because of this incident and I will be missing out on a lot of fish I would have otherwise enjoyed. So don’t get me mad. I am after all a KILLER whale.
L: I like the sound of that.
S: So what are you doing later? Want to get a drink?
L: Sure, but I have an 8 o'clock curfew.
