Crystal Dynamics’ Darrell Gallagher has explained to Gamasutra that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light being digital download only is part of the team’s new strategy.

According to Gallagher, this strategy of of developing smaller, lighter adventures in the digital space between the series’ larger console outings is something that the firm plans to continue pursuing.

He also said that he expects many other publishers to follow suit, in order to keep gamers enveloped in the franchise while they wait two to three years for the next iteration.

Crystal Dynamics’ brand director Karl Stewart reiterated this to us at GDC, stating that the reason Tomb Raider is missing from the title, is because this is not a Tomb Raider title.

“That part is saved for full game releases and we didn’t want this game to affect the other titles,” said Stewart.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is slated for summer on PC, PSN, and XBL. No WiiWare version is planned.
