Never one to shy away from ambition, Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux said at GDC today that the third in the Fable series needs to significantly pan previous editions in terms of sales.

According to this IGN piece, Molyneux said in his GDC session today that the game needs to sell more than 5 million units.

This isn’t a financial goal, but rather a way of demonstrating the game’s artistic direction is succeeding.

He said that Fable sold 3 million units on the original Xbox, and Fable II sold more than 3.5 million copies on 360.

By moving away from a traditional RPG system to emphasise action and adventure elements, Molyneux said he hoped to get even more people involved.

Pete dropped more hints as to the title’s Natal functions in his speech, saying the motion camera is “wonderfully adaptive” for the game.

John Cleese was confirmed as voicing the game’s butler today. Some new shots made it out, too, as did confirmation of Twitter support.

Fable III releases later this year.
