Miyamoto: SMG2 started life as 1.5, and other nuggets of info

Super Mario Galaxy 2

In the latest installment of Iwata Asks, Nintendo’s president chats with Shigeru Miyamoto regarding Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Turns out, the game originally started life as Mario Galaxy 1.5 – at least in codename form.

The reason the game was titled this way, was because Miyamoto didn’t want the staff to try too hard with the game and get it done within a year’s time.

However, it took the team 2.5 years to compete it, and while the same stage formations as the original Mario Galaxy were being used, the team added new tricks and gimmicks until the courses were 90 percent new.

Miyamoto also revealed that when creating a game, Nintendo spends a year redefining the players’ character control before starting on stage design and the rest.

There’s more to it, obviously, but we can’t read Japanese, and of this post, the English version has not been posted.

So until then, head on over to IGN and Andriasang for more.

The latest bit of footage for the game can be found here.
