1UP has posted a retrospective on the first E3, which on June 2, 1990 was still part of the Consumer Electronics Show.
Back then, two annual CES expos took place for gaming companies to showcase new and upcoming projects to media and retail outlets: the summer event in Chicago, and the winter event in Las Vegas.
Granted, the winter expo still takes place every year, as 1UP points out, but the summer event became so large it had to be moved from Chicago to LA, subsequently morphing into the massive E3 we know today.
Through the link, you will see such by-gone gems as Dudley Moore, “Genesis Does what Nintendo Don’t”, funny hairstyles and thick mustaches, Atari’s Lynx portable console, and lots of men and women in “power” suits.
It makes us not only feel a bit old and weathered, but slightly amused.
The reason? While technology is much more advanced than it was, developers are still – 20-years later – talking about motion control and teaching music through games.
It’s like the only difference between the 1990 show and last week’s E3, is just bigger, shinier toys and a lot less hair.
