Sony has said that it’s a bit harder to make older games 3D than it is to create a new one that incorporates the tech.

Speaking to OPM, Sony’s senior development manager Simon Benson said that more titles may be getting the 3D treatment, but the retrofitting is a bit tricky due to the HD output.

“I’m sure we will [retrofit more games with 3D], as adding 3D to a game can make it a whole new experience,” he said. [But} retrofitting 3D is actually harder than building 3D into a game from the outset.

“One of the big issues is that all of the game assets were designed to work with only one HD output. Being able to render them twice to make a 3D output can be a challenge.

“Also, the game interfaces are often designed to only work in 2D. The process used [to] covert the games varies greatly… so there isn’t really a ‘one size fits all’ solution.”

It was revealed Monday that Sony’s to release Firmware 3.20 on June 10 for PS3 in Japan, which supports the option of going 3D, and was previously speculated during GDC back in March.

The first games supported are Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and Pain, which were revealed as getting the 3D treatment back in April.
