CNN Kinect review: Looks extremely promising, still concerned about the price

CNN spent some time with Kinect recently, and it sounds like the reviewer was sold on the new hands-free controller.

Well, sold on all but the price.

According to the review, Dance Central and our Shape: Fitness Evolved were the two standout titles for Kinect, and described the former as “the closest you can get to an actual dance class without having to step inside a studio.”

However, the review was not all cotton candy and roller coaster rides for the reviewer. Here’s an excerpt as to why:

While Kinect looks extremely promising, I’m still concerned about the price.

For [the price], customers can buy an entire game system: a new Xbox 360 Arcade Spring Bundle, which comes with two games, or for $129, a used Wii from Gamestop.

Strange. For a product that’s being marketed as a device that’s supposed to reduce barriers of entry, the $150 tag seems downright antithetical to that mission.

Because of that, I don’t expect Kinect will be a blockbuster out of the gate.

The review goes on to state that those with the “extra cash shouldn’t let the price stop them from trying out the next generation of gaming”, but at the same time, “the question remains whether Xbox 360 owners will bite”.

Kinect launches in the US on November 4, with a European date – hopefully- being announced during gamescom.
