Well, 4th of July means a lot of things to a lot of different people... but if you love hot dogs it can only mean one thing... Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. Competitive eaters from around the world travel to Nathan's every year to eat their way to glory and fame!
However, this year former hot dog eating champion, and fan favorite, Takeru Kobayashi, was banned from competing over a "contract dispute" with organizer, Major League Eating. He was forced to watch from the stands like everyone else.
Kobayashi takes his competitive eating very seriously. He was furious that he was not allowed to compete this year, and as you can imagine things got way out of control.
As they were announcing the winner, some of Kobayashi's fans started chanting, "Let him eat! Let him eat!"
Kobayashi took that opportunity to jump on stage and steal the show. He was immediately arrested and taken to jail. Who knew competitive hot dog eating was full of such drama?
Kobayashi told reporters, "I went as a spectator to cheer on my friends, and everyone was yelling 'let him eat,' so I was hoping they would let me eat and prove I am still the champ."
That was NOT the case... but Kobayashi was unapologetic. Upon his realease from jail this morning he proclaimed, "I am HUNGRY!"
The actual winner and true "champ" this year was Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, who ate 54 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
54 hot dogs in 10 minutes! That's not even his best record. Last year he ate 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes! That's insane!
