Sony: Move is a “virtual reality controller”

Move is not a shiny stick and camera ensemble. No sir. It’s your ticket to the world of “virtual reality”.

“We like to think of it sometimes, instead of a motion controller, as a virtual reality controller,” SCEA senior researcher Richard Marks told IGN.

“Really, it’s a 3D, manipulate the world, reach into the scene, do what you want type of controller that didn’t exist before.”

Hot stuff. Marks showed what he meant by creating bendy bits of plastic, fiddling around with 3D models and drawing in 3D, as you can see in the interview below.

Marks also showed a demo where a controller in each hand appeared as a chameleon hand on the screen; he moved across a tree branch by latching on with alternate hands and pulling the wood toward him.

“This is a different way to navigate a 3D space,” said the developer.

Take a look. Move hits Europe on September 15, the US on September 19 and Japan on October 21.
