I’ll admit it, I like myself a good nerd. Whether it’s the more stereotypical glasses-toting, sweater vest-wearing, good-at-math kind of guy... or the modern nerd who draws you in with his good looks then surprises you with his technological know-how.
Lady Nerds are a different breed. Quick-witted, intellectually present and often pretty in that way that requires them to try very little. They are more than deserving of a little acknowledgment as well from the sexy police.
Often times, the best nerds come from fiction, whether it be from TV, Film, or literature. Here’s some of my all-time favorite nerds who make me proud to call myself a Chic Geek.
10. Annie Edison - Community
One of the greatest conflicts that plagues young nerds is the shame of their brains, which is what makes Community’s Annie Edison so different. She, like Liz Lemon and Willow demonstrate a solid example that lady nerds should never be embarrassed of their intelligence or quirkiness, that acceptance usually adds to their attraction in the end and their overall growth as a person.
9. Doogie Howser - Doogie Howser, M.D.
How could we not fall in love with Neil Patrick Harris as a 16-year-old doctor, who also faces the everyday tirals and tribulations of being a teenager. I mean, he's a genius who can save a life, but he can't figure out how love works. Though sadly I looked and the Doogie Howser Fanclub on Facebook doesn't have very many friends at all. This is an outrage! Something needs to be done about that!
8. Velma - Scooby Doo
While Shaggy and Scooby where hiding in barrels or doing “scoobie snacks” in the van, Velma was the one actually solving the freakin’ mysteries. The show really should have been called “Velma and a bunch of morons.” Daphne was cute and all, but if you wanted beauty AND brains, Velma is the way to go.
7. Seth Cohen - The OC
Seth represents the ultra-nerd/geek in the 21st century. Comic book aficionado, avid video game player, and connoisseur of indie rock bands you’ve never even heard of, he can make even the coldest female heart melt with just a simple look into his big brown eyes. I’m not quite sure what kept me watching The OC for all four seasons, the dramatic plot-twists or the fantasy of attending a Death Cab for Cutie concert one day with the show’s cutest Cohen.
6. Jim Halpert - The Office
Jim Halpert represents that quiet nerd in your science class that you always thought was shy and reserved, only to shock you unexpectedly one day when he stages an elaborate prank to secure the class brown-noser into a hilarious snafu. Consistently cute in his creative ways of unleashing his humor to the cozy work place on The Office, as well as being easy on the eyes Halpert almost makes me want to pack my bags and move to Scranton just to gaze into his baby blues.
5. Willow - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Hardly second fiddle to the show’s title character, Willow became a quick fan favorite from her superhuman ability to always know obscure details regarding the monster Buffy was battling against that particular week, but she represents the kind of Lady Nerd that is completely comfortable within her geek shoes. Unapologetic for her bookishness, she immediately captured the hearts of male nerds who where hypnotized by those amazing eyes... and the female nerds that wanted to be her. I still belong to the latter group.
4. Nick Andopolis - Freaks and Geeks
Although technically a “freak” on the Judd Apatow show Freaks and Geeks, Jason Segal as Nick Andopolis tapped into a shade of awkward adolescence rarely seen on TV and film. At times dark and mysterious, other times goofy and immature, he portrayed the average High School nerd with an amazing amount of depth. His nerdiness is something of an exception to the universal “Nerd” rule in which he doesn’t realize just how nerdy he truly is; which just adds to his sex appeal. All I can say is, “Nick, I’d watch you play along to Rush albums on your drums any day."
3. Liz Lemon - 30 Rock
Liz Lemon represents the modern nerd ring-leader, the nerd-leader if you will. She teaches young Lady Nerds in the year 2010 how to use your nerdiness in the absolute best ways and to not be afraid of being yourself. For young women who feel like their geekiness won’t amount to anything more than being socially awkward, simply look to Liz Lemon’s example of the light at the end of the tunnel.
2. Scott Pilgrim - Scott Pilgrim V. The World
Scott Pilgrim has many qualities that strip him of his “nerd” title: lead guitarist in an amazing garage/rock band called Sex Bob-Ombs, and dead-set attractive with that instant-boyfriend quality. However, don’t be fooled - Scott’s nerdiness is ever present, in not only his obsession with video games and other geeky favorites, but of his vulnerability in dealing with women. He’s the kind of guy you just wanna hug and say, “Hey. You’re attractive in your sheepiness. Everything’s going to be okay."
1. Max Fischer - Rushmore
Jason Schwartzman’s performance as Max Fischer in the Wes Anderson film Rushmore, gave light to a different kind of nerd: the ambitious, eccentric, maniacal nerd. Fischer can accomplish just about anything he sets his sights to, a trait that is more often coupled with comic book super villains. Yet, it’s the softness of Fischer’s features, the vulnerability present within his eyes and the short, dark, and handsome features that Schwartzman brings to the portrayal of Fischer, that makes this motivated boy genius into a certifiable nerd hunk.
Who did I leave off the list... Dwight from The Office? There are so many more... Who are your favorite sexy nerds and why? I know there are a lot that I didn't include here....
