Ignition Entertainment’s Takeyasu Sawaki has said he doesn’t want his latest game to be suited to a Western Audience, and is instead choosing to “embrace Japanese conventions” with El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.
Speaking with Gamasutra, Sawaki said because he is Japanese, he wanted to make something “that only Japanese people can make”, while forgoing “European people’s way”.
The game is a Japanese re-imagining of the book of Enoch, and is a third-person fantasy action title staring a human caught up in a pivotal battle raging between Heaven and the Fallen Angels working for God – which sounds very “Western” on the surface.
“I read, of course, the Book of Enoch, and I also read a lot of other people’s books dealing with those two characters,” said Sawaki. “I think all of those books were boring. I think my image of Enoch is closer to the original Enoch. Because I read a lot of information, and based on that, I drew this Enoch.
“I have my own idea, and now… I have to accept a lot of other ideas coming from other companies or the UK office (Ignition). So, I’m just struggling with what’s good for me.”
Either way, the game sounds very interesting.

The game is slated for Europe and US on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2011.
