10 Most Bizarre Fastfood Restaurants

Julia Prescott

Nowadays you need to pack a little bit of a punch in your fast food festivities; otherwise the customer could just as easily take a trip next door where there will most likely be another, somewhat identical eatery. Being a fan of the bizarre, the weird, the extraordinary I decided to take my taste buds on a trip ‘round the world and to see just how many unconventional eateries I could sink my computer keyboard into. Here’s a list of restaurateurs who take their fast food to the next lev. Enjoy!

1. McDonald’s – Parisian Style Orlando, Florida

Orlando, Florida currently lays claim to some of the world’s most interesting and unique Mc-Eateries. Not only does the state currently hold firmly the title of, “World’s Largest McDonald’s” in its West Sand Lake Road location (a tourist attraction for miles) but it also prides itself on this McDonald’s “European Café” complete with a menu that has fancier items like grilled paninis, Belgian waffles, and gourmet wraps. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Julia, can’t I get those items just about anywhere?” Yes, but never before have you been able to chase a gourmet Panini with a McFlurry. If it sounds heavenly, just imagine what it tastes like.

2. Voodoo Donuts Portland, Oregon

Voodoo Donuts seems like it could just be a regular old donut shop….ok, a regular old donut shop with some interesting creations (they’ve been made famous with their maple bacon donut as well as their donut name-sake ‘The Voodoo Donut’ a jelly donut turned morbid)…and perhaps a regular old donut shop with some unique interior design (the insides are painted pink and often covered with pun-filled signs and an overall ‘Voodoo Daddy’ theme)…and alright, no regular old donut shop would also act as a wedding chapel. Yeah, you heard me – you can get married and then chomp down on some donut holes in the same breath you say, “I Do.” Now that’s livin'.

3. Taco Bell on the Beach Pacifica, California

Let’s face it, we live in the real world. When we’re active and surfing up a storm we don’t want energy drinks or Gatorade or any of that allegedly “healthy” stuff. The only thing that could be possibly quench your thirst or settle your hunger is a 12 oz. Mountain Dew and a Double Decker taco. If this sounds like you, then it’s a good thing the good people at Taco Bell decided to have your back sea-side and constructed this one-of-a-kind fast food stand on the beach, the only standing Taco Bell that has a surfers-only side window.

4. Minimalist KFC Keflavík, Iceland

Architect PK Arkitektar re-imagined this classically vibrant fast food giant with a more subdued touch. This fancy and elegant approach makes even their Double-Down sandwich super classy.

5. Muvbox Fast Food from reused Shipping Container Box Montreal, Canada

Muvbox is a shipping container better known in its native Canada, but still pretty cool when you consider what these humble and environmentally-friendly fast food-ers have done to it to create their own restaurant. Just as you would hope, this eatery can fold up just as easily as it folds out, maintaining its box-like structure. So. Awesome.

6. McDonald’s on a Real Farm - Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, CA

This McDonald’s is located in the heart of farming country, so it’s only right that it’s drive-thru works just as well for cars as it does for tractors. After you spend a day minding the acres, you don’t even have to hop off your John Deer to get a Happy Meal. Now if only they allowed go carts…

7. Chip Shop Brooklyn, New York

Chip Shop is a little piece of Great Britain transplanted to hipster Brooklyn. At this quaint café, you can feast on British staples like Fish ‘n Chips; but don’t stop there with the fried festivities, Chip Shop has been known to deep fry just about anything. Yes, I didn’t stutter – anything. Pizza, Candy Bars, you name it! It’s a deep fry diva’s dream.

8. Bamn Automat New York, New York

Back in the day (namely around the ‘20s and ‘30s) automats were popular with city-dwellers who were too on-the-go to catch a hot sit down meal. That’s where automats came in, acting as a fancier vending machine providing hot meals for low prices within seconds. Bamn borrows this idea, but steps up the recipes a bit to include spicy chicken sandwiches and vegan wraps. It’ll make you say, “Hot Bamn!” (I’m sorry, I just had to!)

9. Cereality Santa Cruz, California

Cereality answers the desperate cry heard around college campuses nationwide. “Where or where can I just get a bowl of cereal as a meal or snack?” Cereality’s got your number, except they’ve amped up the usual dry cereal-and-milk combo with marshmallows, chocolate syrup, and other toppings usually found in a fancy ice cream bar. And if you think your leftover milk is super delicious after eating chocolate-flavored cheerios, just imagine what throwing strawberry syrup into the mix might taste like. WARNING: Don’t bring your diabetic friends here.

10. Waffle Cabin Okemo, Vermont

True to the maple syrup that Vermont residents pride themselves on, this snowy restaurant serves up gourmet waffles with a bit of a twist: You don’t have to slip out of your snow gear to enjoy them. Waffle Cabin is the first (and only, currently) restaurant that has a ski-thru instead of a simple drive-thru, making life all the more easier when skiing down the bunny slope, waffle-wich in hand.
