Roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green-bean casserole and cranberry sauce are yummy, but so boring! This year, switch things up with a few of these REAL dishes from around the world.
1. Venom Spritzer
A delightful alternative to beer, wine or Cosmopolitans, Venom Spritzers are quite simple to make–mix 1 part venom with 6 parts soda—but you may want to have a doctor on hand to administer anti-venom should things turn bad.
2. Marinated Rooster Testicles
If you don’t fancy snacking on the top part of the rooster, perhaps you’ll find the bottom bits more appealing: Marinated Rooster Testicles are a Northern Chinese delicacy.
3. Thousand Year Old Eggs
The popular appetizer is made more special if you only use eggs containing partially developed chicken embryos.
4. Scorpion Soup
We found a delectable selection of soups for your Thanksgiving dinner. First up: Scorpion Soup, a Chinese favorite with a pleasant, woody taste. Just be sure you don’t eat the poisonous tail.
5. Raw Blood Soup
Made from the raw blood of ducks or geese, Vietnamese Raw Blood Soup can be a bit of a party foul if you accidentally drain a bird with the H5N1 bird flu virus. Whoopsie!
6. Caldero de Cardan Soup
Last up on the soup front is this Bolivian dish made from bull testicles and penises. Hey, it’s also considered to be an aphrodisiac!
7. Namibian Warthog Anus
As Anthony Bourdain demonstrated in an infamous episode of “No Reservations,” Warthog Anus is best enjoyed around the campfire, where it’s traditionally eaten unwashed and al dente.
8. Escamoles
A Mexican dish also known as Insect Caviar, Escamoles is made from ant larvae harvested from the roots of agave or maguey plants. It tastes like cottage cheese!
9. Raw Tongue Sandwich
Who needs leftover turkey sandwiches when you can enjoy a nice sliced cow-tongue sandwich with mustard on rye? The kids will love this one!
10. Haggis
This traditional Scottish dish is made of sheep’s stomach stuffed with sheep lung, heart and liver, among other things. Be careful if you decide to serve it for dinner—sheep lung is illegal in the United States.
11. Kopi Luwak
A robust after-dinner drink, Kopi Luwak is also known as Civet Coffee. Why? We’re glad you asked! First the civet (also known as a meerkat) eats the coffee berries. After digesting them and pooping them out, coffee snobs dry them out, grind them up and serve them with heavy cream.
12. Chicken Ice Cream
It's exactly what it sounds like... delicious!
