Thanks to Facebook your love life has been turned into a grid of numbers and specifics as to when you're going to get dumped.
David McCandless over at TED Talk scanned over 10,000 status-updates to learn more about when couples breakup and what he and his team discovered was worthy of a Facebook status update.
1. Most Breakups Are Announced On Monday
Have a bad weekend anyone? It doesn't mean that the couples actually breakup on Mondays, but that's when people are most likely to change their facebook status. A nice clean start to the dating week, and another reason why Mondays can suck a duck.
2. Valentine's Day Blows
Perhaps it's the high expectations that this Hallmark holiday creates, but I have long believed that it's bad luck to start a new relationship right before Valentine's Day. That puts a lot of pressure on a couple that doesn't even know if they are really "into" each other, you can't avoid this stupid holiday... and Facebook statistics back my theory up.
3. The Spring Break... UP
Not shocking here... social networkers like to cut all loose ends before Spring Break... that way everyone is free to hook-up with whoever they want. Highly convenient.
4. April Fools Fall Out Of Love
Do you think that people are changing their relationship status as an April Fools prank, or are people really breaking up on April Fools day? Seems like an odd time to break up. But then again... it's as good a time as any.
5. Summer Breakups
Summer lovin' happens so fast... but you can't fall in love over the summer unless you dump the ol' ball and chain from the Spring. Don't worry, you can always get back together in the fall. No harm, no foul.
6. Two Weeks Before Christmas
Suicides and breakups are very popular over the holiday season. We can take some consolation in the fact that the least popular day of the year to breakup seems to be Christmas day... or maybe it's just that nobody wants to be the loser who changed their relationship status on Christmas Day.
A word of advice from me... don't change your relationship status to "in a relationship" unless you've been in that relationship for at least a year. Nothing is worse than changing your relationship status just in time to get dumped and have to change it back.
What do you think about Facebook relationship status updates? Is it a reliable way to track our love lives?
