Finally, we’ve gotten some information on what exactly the action elements of Catherine will entail.
According to Famitsu and translated by Andriasang, the action bits of the game take place during Vincent’s nightmares.
Action-oriented nightmares will happen to Vincent every night, during which he “must flee from mysterious creatures while climbing a stage that’s set up like a giant flight of stairs, with the aim of reaching the exit at the top of the stage”. The stairs look more like a Jenga tower than an actual set of stairs, and this way it allows Vincent to move blocks around to form said stairs to walk and climb. If you run out of time or fall, Vincent will die – so be sure of where you are stepping and make sure it’s a reliable path.
Some blocks include Trap and Bomb types with the former generating spikes and the later exploding when stepped on. Explosions will also cause nearby blocks to get blown to bits as well, and Famitsu suggests you can take advantage of the explosions to create new paths.
Three stages were also shown in the magazine: Stage 3: Torture Chamber, Stage 5 Quadrangle, and Stage 6: Clock Tower. Each has its own color and theme and will pop up a stage clear scene when completed, providing you details on how far you climbed and whether you earned a Safety Bonus trophy for getting through unscathed.
Oh, and the sheep men you keep seeing in screens? You can chat with these strange fellas during the dream sequences. They can provide you with vital information you can use to your advantage should you make it through the nightmare and awake the following morning.
Famitsu also noted the game will have online functionality with PSN and XBL, but didn’t state whether there would be co-op, multiplayer, leaderboards, or what. Hopefully more information regarding online will be detailed in the near future.
There’s some really scary looking screens below.
Catherine is out February 17 in Japan. No word on a western release just yet.
