Expert: Bieber Fever Is Like Terrorism

C.J. Arabia

Bieber fever isn't deadly, but it can be dangerous.

Fans get so obsessed with Bieber that they don't think clearly. We've all seen the videos of Justin being chased by out-of-control fans. It can be a little freaky.

And that's not the worst of it... I'm talking about recent death threates directed to the Bieb's new "girlfriend" Selena Gomez on Twitter.

After photos surfaced of Biebs and Gomez getting cozy on a yacht in the Caribbean...

Fans didn't just get jealous, they got criminal. Tweeting things like:

@selenagomez I'll kill you I swear on GOD!!!!

@selenagomez If you are the Girlfriend of Justin I will Kill you I HATE YOU :@ !!!

I mean, you can laugh it off but these aren't funny. These are actual death threats, and Justin is partially to blame. He and his handlers use social media networks like Twitter to make fans feel close to him. Creating a false intimacy.

"If you're a 10-year-old and you get a tweet from Justin, you don't have the capacity for abstract thought. You can't think, 'Well, he probably has a PR person who generates these tweets for him.' You as a 10-year-old think, 'Oh, he's sending this to me, he is telling me about his life,'" child psychiatrist, Dr. Alan Ravitz explains to PopEater. "So on the one hand, he has this PR team creating this sense of false intimacy, and on the other hand he creates a problem for himself because he encourages intrusion into his private life. I don't think he can have it both ways."

Dr. Ravitz goes on to say, "Where are the parents? Who is trying to guide these kids? Who is telling them to be polite and civil to each other? In a way, it's analogous to terrorism, where the only thing important is your own personal agenda, and if anyone gets in the way of that, you're allowed to do whatever you want to them."

I think it's okay to be a fan. I mean I like to read the gossip magazines myself. Some people like to get up and read sports scores, and others want the dirt on their favorite celebs. There's nothing wrong with that, but when a celebrity can ruin your day, make you threaten someone or make you want to kill yourself... well, that's when you need to seek mental counseling.

Celebrity obsession is often based in in low self-esteem issues and bad family relationships. People don't like themselves and their lives and retreat into a world of celebrity obsession. It's more fun to obsess on their favorite celebrity than to live their own lives.

So what's the deal? Who is to blame for these death threats? Justin? The parents? The fans? Society? What do you think? Tell me in the comments below.
