Think your relationship is rock solid? Think it'll stand the test of time? What about the test of Facebook?
Most of us like Facebook because it helps us connect with our friends, but what seems innocent to most of us is causing a lot of problems for people in unstable relationships.
People who are in shaky relationships are often tempted to cheat as they hook up with new and exciting people on Facebook. They meet someone new, or an old flame, they're sick of the relationship they're in, next thing you know they're sending flirty messages and sexy photos and BAM - it's break-up time.
Even worse, in legal documents an amazing 80% of U.S. divorce lawyers are reporting that "social media evidence" is now being listed as one of the many reasons that marriages are busting up.
One in five splitting couples are actually listing Facebook BY NAME in their legal proceedings according to a survey from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. That's almost one quarter! And that figure only promises to rise.
Relationship counselors and lawyers have been telling bickering couples to stay away from Facebook and other social networking sites until they can figure things out. It just makes things uglier and more complicated. You don't have to go to a bar or a party to get in trouble anymore... trouble comes right into your home via your computer.
One divorce lawyer told reporters that she's handled 30 divorces since last May and every single one of them has involed Facebook. She went on to say, "Suspicious spouses have used it to spy and find evidence of flirting and even affairs, which have then led to break-ups."
So what does all this mean? I mean, would these relationships have stood the test of time even if Facebook didn't exist? I doubt it. Unfailthful people will find ways to be unfailthful, and people who want out of a relationship are going to find the excuses and evidence they need with or without Facebook.
