With products like Four Loko and Whipped Lightning, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with Soda Pot.
California entrepreneur Clay Butler will soon be marketing his latest invention, which he lovingly calls Canna Cola - a soft drink that is choc-full of medicinal THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. He will be marketing this soft drink toward medical marijuana dispensaries.
It's certainly not the first medical marijuana soda to hit the market, but Butler sure is getting a lot of press and attributes his success to good marketing. With flavors like Doc Weed (Dr Pepper?), Sour Diesel (Squirt?), Grape Ape (Fanta?) and Orange Kush (Orange Crush?) it's sure to be a hit with the stoners.
But, before you get ready to run out and grab a 6-pack of this stuff, remember, this is medicine and will cost you $10 - $15 a bottle. You can only get it with a proper prescription, though the soda's marketers don't seem to be talking about what medical conditions these carbonated beverages are qualified to treat.
Also, the soda's inventor Clay Butler doesn't do drugs and has no prescription for medical marijuana so he may never even consume the product he's selling. Clay told a newspaper, "Even though, personally, I'm not interested and I don't think it's right for me, I'm a firm believer that adults have an inalienable right to think, eat, smoke, drink, ingest, decorate, dress any way they choose to do so. It's your life; it's your body."
Soda manufacturers will have a lot of legal hoops to jump through as well - there's the Brownie Law SB 258 which doubles penalties for anyone marketing products that combine marijuana with "a candy product" or markets the product toward minors.
The Brownie Law: Hard At Work!
You also have the Feds to deal with - incase you've forgotten marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the federal government, despite many state laws legitimizing it's medical use. It's illegal to transport the soda across state lines, so the soda would have to be manufactured in whatever states they plan on selling it.
What do you think about this Soda Pot? Do you think it's marketing itself toward kids? What do you think of medical marijuana in general? Is it a scam? Do you think it really helps people? We want to know what you think in the comments below!
