DiRT 3 physics system revamped, undead car multiplayer mode added

COIN-OP TV has posted a video of DiRT 3’s senior game designer Paul Coleman chatting about some of the features in the latest installment for the series.

In DiRT 3, the development team wanted the graphics to be very photo-realistic, so it went out and took over 50,000 photos of each of the different locations included in the game.

Codemasters also added weather and time of day effects, and tried to throw as much Rally experience into the game as possible along with all the other racing disciplines with around 50 different cars to choose from.

The physics system has been worked on, the center of gravity on the cars was raised to a more realistic position resulting in the vehicles weight shift being far more accurate when taking corners and large turns. This also allowed the team to create a more realistic response when hugging the more sketchy angles.

“From a gameplay point of view, we’ve got more party modes and social aspects of the game, but which should make players who are not necessarily into Rally have a bit of fun before they go out to the pubs,” said Coleman. “We’ve got some cool party modes that you can play in the DC Compound, and that means you can go in there, chase each other around, play hide and seek, and other cool stuff.”

Other social aspects include the ability to able to upload 30-second clips of achievements or wipeouts, depending what you want the rest of the community to see.

Over on Kotaku, Coleman outlined another mode in the game which is an “undead” mode.

Should players get a bit bored, they can try out a multiplayer mode where one car becomes undead and has to infect the others before time runs out. Coleman said the person driving the undead car will notice their screen change color into a slimy sort of green to “feel” infected. The dev team considered putting actual zombies on the track, but the car manufacturers they worked with were uncomfortable with the idea of their cars hitting anything that resembled a human. Even a shambling, rotting, undead one, apparently.

It’s out May 24 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
