More than 13,000 people voted and the results are in! Mario is the top rated video game character of all time!
But who else made the list? The good folks at the Guinness Book Of World Records have released their Gamers Edition and they claim to have the ultimate list of who's who in video game celebrity releasing a list of the top 50 most beloved video game characters of all time.
Nintendo took top honor with 11 characters in the Top 50, followed by Sony with 6 and Capcom with 5.
If you want to know who else is at the top of the list, look no further! Here are the top 10 most beloved video game characters of all time!
10. Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega, 1990)
Sonic put Sega on the map when it comes to video games. He was actually created to rival the popularity of Nintendo’s Super Mario, and he hasn't done too bady with that.
9. Kratos (God of War, Sony, 2005)
Based on Greek mythology, Kratos was the god of strength, might, power and sovereign rule. But in the video game world he made his first appearance in the game God of War. He was so successful as a character that they developed of five additional games featuring him as the protagonist. You can tell he's badass because he has a racing stripe.
8. Gordon Freeman (Half-Life, Valve, 1998)
Gordon doesn't say much, but he lets his crowbar do the talking for him. He's also pretty darn sexy.
7. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, Eidos 1996)
Laura Croft is beautiful, intelligent, and athletic. She's an archaeologist and adventurer who ventures into ancient, hazardous tombs and ruins around the world. I mean, how can you not love her? She's like a hot female Indiana Jones with a double-D's.
6. Pac-Man (Pac-Man, Namco, 1980)
When Pac-man came out the video game world was dominated by space shooting games like Asteroids but Pac-man changed all that creating a whole new genre of video games! Mrs. Pac-man is actually faster and better, but she didn't make top ten. I blame sexism.
5. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII, Square, 1997)
Cloud is the iconic mercenary and self-proclaimed ex-member of SOLDIER, a select, genetically augmented military unit operating under the defacto world government and megacorporation Shinra Electric Power Company. Cloud's popularity has inspired tons of figurines and jewelry. Fans just love him, even though he has VERY stupid hair.
4. Solid Snake (Metal Gear, Konami, 1987)
Possessing an IQ of 180 and fluent in six languages, he is known as "the man who makes the impossible possible" and his exploits have made him into a living legend among the military black ops and fans alike. Also, he loves hiding in boxes.
3. Master Chief (Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft, 2001)
I like to call him John-117, but Master Chief is a Petty Officer of the Navy. He's a Spartan-II commando of the UNCS Naval Special Warfare Command. He's the most important hero of the Human-Covenant war and takes the number 3 slot in our list of video game super stars. His brother, Master Chef, did not make the list.
2. Link (The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, 1986)
LISTEN! The main protagonist of the Zelda series Link is usually depicted as a young boy or teen, in green clothing. He grows to become a legendary hero and takes the #2 slot in this list of favorites.
And Of' Course in the #1 position...
1. Mario (Donkey Kong, Nintendo, 1981)
Not just the mascot for the company Nintendo, the mascot for my childhood and many of our childhoods. It's no wonder that Mario takes the #1 slot.
