Android Marketplace shuts down more emulators

By Brenna Hillier

A number of legacy system emulators have been removed from the Android Marketplace without warning.

Engadget reports Nesoid, Snesoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Ataroid, Gearoid and Gameboid have all vanished from the Marketplace.

Creator Yong Zhang confirmed his developer account has been suspended without notice.

A popular PSOne emulator was also shut down by Google at the end of March, presumably following a complaint from Sony. Several Sega console emulators have also been axed recently.

Emulator developers have taken steps to support purchasers of their applications by turning to unofficial Android marketplaces.

Emulation software is officially frowned upon by platform holders and copyright owners, which do not recognise “abandonware”, a concept often touted by the homebrew community in support of resurrecting games.
