Get the mocap lowdown on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Over on the US PS Blog, Sony has posted a behind-the-scenes look at the motion capture process of Uncharted 3.

According to Uncharted 3’s creative director, Amy Hennig, Naughty Dog is “kind of ahead of the pack,” when it comes to using mocap technology with this iteration in the game series.

But it wasn’t always like that: according to the firm, the technology used on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was ” an outdated, uncomfortable place to perform, equipped with a camera array that painted the room with eye-searing red light”. The studio used also made it impossible to record dialog due to the acoustics, Naught Dog has to add in-game speech later on.

After the success of the first title, the firm upgraded to the House of Moves for its motion capture work in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The House of Moves facilities was much more sophisticated, and included a sound stage so that dialog could be recorded while the actors moved around in their spandex, ball-dotted suits.

With Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, the team now has its own mocap set.

Uncharted 3 is out November 1.
