Here's one to get you thinking. Following their home waterbirth, a hippie Canadian couple had decided to hide their baby's sex/gender from the world...
The baby's name is Storm and when he/she was born his/her parents sent the following announcement to their friends and family.
The only people who know the sex of baby Storm are her/his siblings, parents and the midwives that helped to deliver him/her. Storm's grandparents do not even know the baby's sex.
Needless to say, this family's decision is freaking everyone out. Not just in Canada, but around the world people are expressing their outrage at this couple's decision to raise a genderless baby. There are a few people who are supportive of their decision, but the vast majority of people who hear this story are outraged.
Storms older brothers are also encouraged to make their own gender choices... as you can see in this image... those aren't girls... those are Storm's older brothers!
It's not just about Storm either... what about these brothers who have been told to keep this big secret from the world. Unable to talk about it with even their closest friends, family or family therapist. What is this big "secret" going to do to them mentally.
Gender stuff has been all over the news lately with Chaz Bono and his/her sex change operation. Chaz has also been calling out Hollywood's prom king and queen Brad and Angelina because their daughter Shiloh tends to dress like a little boy. Chaz is sure that Shiloh has some kind of gender issues and talks about it to the press.
People close to Angelina say that Chaz needs to mind her/his own business. One insider said, “People have been openly discussing Shiloh’s sexuality for a while, simply because she dresses like a tomboy. It’s ridiculous. She’s not even 5 and she’s already labeled as having a gender crisis? It’s upsetting to them — it would be to any parent.” I mean seriously Chaz, MYOB!
I honestly don't think it really matters what they do at this point. The baby looks happy and they seem to really love their children. They can try to hide the baby's gender, but at some point she/he is going to walk into a public restroom and then everyone will know and the jig will be up. Sex/gender is more than how you dress or what toys you play with as a child. Forcing a child to be genderless is as bad as forcing a gay kid to act straight. Denying your child's basic identity is always going to do some kind of harm in the long run. Storm is too young right now to really even know what is going on, but if they insist on continuing this charade into grade school and beyond, then they could really do some damage. At least that's my opinion.
So what do you think about this couple's decision to raise baby Storm without a gender? Do you think it's a cool idea? Do you think it could be harmful to Storm's future? What about her/his brothers? Do you think that keeping a secret like this will be harmful to them? Let's discuss.
