The Secret Histories Of Your Favorite Games

Daniel Dominguez

Video games look amazing today. They feature insane, crisp graphics and intense, often adult themes. Huge environments where hundreds of enemies pour out of lush jungles to battle you are a mainstay. Many of these impressive feats of video game technology are sequels to very old video games though. So what did they look like back in the day?

Duke Nukem

Nowadays Duke is a bad-ass alien murdering woman loving sex machine. But back then, he mostly spent his time shooting what looked like spaghetti out of a toy gun at boxes.

Ninja Gaiden

THEN:

NOW:

The original Ninja Gaiden was the story of a sexist ninja who hated it when girls tried to join his secret tree house club. Nowadays he's way more into equality and battles demons and such.

The Legend Of Zelda

THEN:

NOW:

In the original Legend of Zelda Link was an adorable kitten who battled Ganon by batting around string until Ganon got bored and just left. Since then Link has become an elf who battles Gannon using swords. Some argue this is more cool, others less.

Star Fox

THEN:

NOW:

The first Star Fox was an evolution in gaming technology for the Super Nintendo using the then revolutionary "Super FX microchip." The Star Fox of today is a real, living fox and eagle with human bodies who fly around space fighting space crime. Now that's what I call a sequel.

Metal Gear

THEN:

NOW:

Back in the day Snake fought narcoleptics who would always fall asleep right before key objectives in the game. The Metal Gear of today have greatly enchanced graphics and storyline, plus 20 minute cut scenes so you can take a break from playing a video game while you are playing your video game.

Solitaire

THEN:

The solitaire of yesteryear was a simple card game for one person with plain graphics and unremarkable sound effects. However, the solitaire of today isn't Yo Mama's solitaire yo! It is off the hook! Solitaire has... ummm... well... to be honest, Solitaire hasn't changed a whole lot now that I think about it. It kinds still sucks. Your mom likes it though.
