The Oxford English Dictionary has released a list of 400 words that will be making their debut in the next edition. And there are definitely some eyebrow-raising choices. Like choices that make me cry inside when I think of people in the future laughing at us for legitimizing some of these dumb friggin' words.
As always, the internet and social networking make their stamp, with words like retweet and woot. I was gonna say what's next, LOL and OMG? But then I found out those were entered into the official English lexicon last year. I feel like such a linguistic noob--which is now an official Oxford English Dictionary insult, btw. BTW is still just slang.
There are some more legit entries from the internet world, however. Cyber-bullying seems like a reasonable enough entry. I guess some people do need clarification between cyber-bullying and old school beat yo a** bullying.
And sexting probably deserves to make its dictionary debut. I'm down with that! It's sullied enough reputations, so why not the English language?
The world of fashion has also contributed a few doozies. Like mankini. Is this a real thing? I honestly assumed it was just a joke. Are men actually sporting these on the beach? What the hell, people? This should not be allowed in the dictionary or in any public setting for that matter. Unless it's a Japanese game show. I'll buy that.
And of course we can't forget jeggings, which I'm pretty sure that if they're not out of style yet, will be by the time the ink is dry on the next dictionary printing. Ironically, along with these revealing fashion faux pas, gastric band has also made the cut. Jeggings and gastric band, two things that should never go together. These are the times we live in, people. We can only hope that the people of the future are even bigger a-holes than we are.
So what do you guys think of these words being in the dictionary? What words do you think they should include? Shoot me some words @desijedeikin or let's use our words to discuss the English language in the comments below!
