This past weekend was VidCon, and I got to go. In the words of the internet, “U Jelly?” You are probably Jelly. If you aren’t aware of VidCon, it’s like comic-con but for the online video community, and without any cosplay. (Can we change this? Next year, I expect to see some people dressed up as Nyan cat or Charlie the Unicorn or Teleporting Fat Guy something.) Pretty much every big and not-so-big YouTube partner was there, and here’s a short rundown of what was UP.
Friday
Friday was an especially Smoshy day since that's when Anthony and Ian did their meet and greet, and the day they did their main stage interview. I was sadly at home photoshopping Nyan Cat into Twilight posters, so I didn’t get to attend. Lots of Smoshers DID get to attend and meet the guys.
Anthony and Ian, and Barry (who does a lot of the business-y stuff for Smosh) also did an interview with TheWillOfDC.
PLUS, Ian and Anthony did this video for the Vidcon YouTube page
Saturday
Saturday was the first day I could actually attend, and besides all the YouTube and online video events, interviews, and panels, they had free smoothies.
And also, Donkey Kong.
So, already pretty good. One of the events I was lucky enough to attend was Tips and Tricks with Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch, the geniuses behind the “FreddieW” YouTube channel.
Freddie actually borrowed my personal camera to shoot some test footage for a demonstration.
I’m never washing my camera again! Actually, it’s probably a good idea not to wash it anyway because, hey, electronics and all. Freddie and Brandon answered tons of questions and in fact went way of their time to get to everybody.
Armed with these tricks, I plan on being a professional YouTuber by next year.
After the FreddieW panel I thought I should MAYBE talk to Ian and Anthony a little, so I met up with them in the greenroom, which was stuffed full of 1) cookies and 2) giant YouTube stars, including Ian and Anthony. Here are just a few of pics I took.
Dane Boedigheimer aka Dane Boe aka The Annoying Orange. He was not at all annoying in person so I think the orange thing is just an act.
The Gregory brothers, the musical geniuses behind schmoyoho and Auto -Tune the News.
Hank Green of The Vlogbros (and one of the brains/organizers behind Vidcon) with Anthony.
Then Hank taught Ian an important lesson about friendship.
Ian an Anthony sit down for an interview with German YouTubers Y Titty.
I had to go outside to find Ryan Higa of nigahiga and David Choi of davidchoimusic. Ian seemed interested in their nipples.
I also ran into Karmin, but we were distracted talking about Nicki Minaj, so I didn’t get to take a picture. Sadface. They were super nice.
Keynote
Here are some pics I took of the big keynote presentation at the end of VidCon. The place was packed with thousands of fans, and it streamed live on YouTube.
Jugglers Rootberry throw some machete knives in front of Sontard.
The Piano Guys’ John Schmidt gets classy with some classical music.
Charlie McDonnell, AKA Charlie Is So Cool Like, gave a speech and it was of course adorable, but people really seemed to like it when he removed his pants.
Karmin rocked out.
Charlie Todd of Improv Everywhere talked about his path to YouTube success, and the choice to go with YouTube over a traditional Hollywood career.
George Watsky killed it with his killer rhymes.
The Gregory bros finished off the keynote with an acoustic set. Their heartfelt performance of “Double Rainbow” made the audience fall in love with rainbows all over again.
