Rare boss says the studio hasn’t fallen “off the map”

By Stephany Nunneley

Rare studio manager Scott Henson has said the developer has “lived up to its potential,” and just because its focus is on family titles such as Kinect Sports, doesn’t mean it has “fallen off the map,” of core game development.

Speaking in an interview with Industry Gamers, Henson said the firm has “changed and evolved,” over the years and because of it, its “focus is different.”

“Fallen off the map is interesting when you sell over three million units,” he said regarding Kinect Sports. “I like that falling off the map. It’s great success in this industry. If you look at what Rare has done, whether it was Killer Instinct in the arcade or Donkey Kong Country and pushing pre-rendered graphics, they always innovate as a studio. That has stayed the same.”

Henson goes on to say Rare has “delivered as much” to Xbox 360 as a platform as other developers.

“With the success of Kinect Sports and what I believe will be a successful Season Two, I think Rare lived up to its potential,” he said while noting that Xbox Avatars “goes far beyond anything the studio has ever done”.

Kinect Sports: Season 2 launches on October 25 in the US and October 28 in Europe.
