Facebook Is NOT Ruining Your Grades!

Desi Jedeikin

A recent study determining whether or not Facebook has an adverse affect on students' grades, came up with a surprising finding. Some kinds of Facebook use actually correlated with higher GPAs!! So if you're stupid, don't blame Facebook! Or in this girl's case, stuiped.

Now, GPAs did decline the more Facebook time the students logged. But an average user seemed to show no decline in their grades. "You have to spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook for it to be related to GPA in a way that is shocking,” Reynol Junco, the study's author says. So I'm guessing if you're familiar with the concept of playing Farmville in a public restroom while dropping a deuce, you're probably not very familiar with the concept of the honor role. BTW I don't think McAfee protects your computer from the kinds of viruses it's picking up here:

The most interesting thing that the study discovered, though, was that all Facebook activities are not created equal. People who were checking out what others were up to and sharing links had higher GPAs, and those who were posting their own updates and chatting had lower GPAs. In other words, information-related activities--good. Socializing and sh*t-kicking--bad.

While the study does seem to be saying that there is a a more beneficial way to use Facebook, nothing in the study indicates that foregoing the more social Facebook activities would result in higher GPAs. Which makes sense. I'm pretty sure the slackers who waste time doing the 'wrong' kind of Facebook would just find some other way to avoid studying.

So if you're doing Facebook 'right'...well then carry on! I'm looking at you, Sid!
