Have you ever had the lifelong dream of owning your own Pikachu?? DUH! Well, now it may actually be possible. Only, the Pikachu will be dead, stuffed and painted to look like everyone's favorite adorable Pokemon character. Did I mention it's also a street rat? Ewww.
The Shibuya Ward in Tokyo has long been over-run by what the citizens call 'Super Rats,' because they are supposedly immune to man-made poisons. And also because 'big ass disgusting rats' wasn't as appealing to tourists. It now seems an artist collective, known as Chim Pom, has taken to the streets, literally, to capture the rats. Sounds helpful. But waste not want not, am I right? They then take their captured prey, kill them (HOW?) and taxidermy those poor suckers into real life Pikachus. Then I guess they pose them in provocative tableaus and photograph them. Looks like someone needs to discharge their electricity glands!
Chim Pom's taxidermied Pikachu project entitled 'Super Rat' (not very creative, art collective!) was recently featured in Pharrell's Tokyo documentary for Palladium shoes. I've got dibs on the Karate Kid/Pika mash up!
Oh and as with any art, there is some underlying commentary on society at the root of the 'Super Rat' project. According to Chim Pom member Ushiro, they are commenting on the "type of girls who hang around Center Gai. Boo those girls!" Uh okay. The girls she's talking about are the ones that look like a cross between a Snooki, a Snuggie and a WTF.
On a more literal note, Chim Pom declares that "Pikachu is also a rat." PIKACHU IS NOT A RAT! He is a chubby mouse! Whose cuteness can somehow only be replicated by kittens or bunnies. Hide yo kittens and bunnies, Japan!
So next time you think you spy a Pikachu...well, I'll let the master say it.
What do you think of Pikachu Chuck Testa-style? Let me know @desijedeikin or in the comments below!
