Uncharted 3 documentary: What does it mean to be a hero?

By Stephany Nunneley

Sony has released the short Uncharted 3 documentary it commissioned from The Last Samurai director and Shakespeare in Love producer Ed Zwick.

The Hero’s Journey, inspired by the events in Drake’s Deception, explores the action adventure genre, and what it means to be a hero.

Zwick said he was originally “unaware of the extraordinary advancement of games such as Uncharted 3,” and the notion that one can have “a more complex hero while still providing the obligatory action” opened up a new range of creative possibilities.

The documentary short was filmed in LA and features responses from actors such as Sam Rockwell, Diane Kruger and Michelle Rodriguez, as well as Zwick, Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Nolan North. Each respondent provides an answer to the question: what does the idea of the hero in action adventure evoke?

“The Uncharted Franchise is an exploration of what heroism means in the action adventure genre and it was interesting for us to explore these themes that we share across entertainment genres – as entertainers we are all posed with similar questions as to how to bring heroism to the fore in such a blockbuster category,” said Hennig.

The documentary is posted below.

Uncharted 3 is out November 1.
