As you well know from attending last night's midnight launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is out today. Sure, we're all excited to shoot Russians and quick scope again, but what I'm enjoying most about the launch is watching news outlets and bloggers that normally don't cover video games try their best to write about it.
"What's a killstreak? Is that a skateboard?"

Every article being written today about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is required to have a description of the setting and gameplay followed by an ironic reversal about gamers wanting to enter into this abysmal word of war and death. So here goes.
The streets of lower Manhattan are in ruin. America's conflict with the Russians has escalated. F-15s soar overhead. Buildings are punctured with bullets. Ten boats that are, I guess, on land now just start exploding all over the place.
And this is the world gamers will dive into today as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 mushroom clouds into stores.
But the media can't really be blamed. They don't understand video games, but they have to cover Call of Duty's release because Call of Duty is huge. Like, huger than you can imagine. Huger even than King Kong and Godzilla and Lady Gaga's new album and The Walking Dead ratings and iPhone announcements.
Huger.

Seemingly every analyst is predicting that it's going to out-sell the series' previous effort, Call of Duty: Black Ops. Keep in mind, that game set the record for first week sales of an entertainment launch. At this rate, Modern Warfare 3 is going to end up with the world record time in the 100m butterfly.
Enjoy it while it lasts, Phelps.

If Call of Duty is your thing, it sounds like you'll enjoy Modern Warfare 3. It's basically the same game, even hovering in that same high 80s, low 90s Metacritic score the rest of the Call of Duty games have gotten. But there are some new features to speak of, including a new weapon upgrading system and kill confirmation by way of picking up your dead enemies' dog tags. Of course, there is the conclusion to the single-player campaign started in the first Modern Warfare, but whatever. Playing Call of Duty for the single player is like watching Transformers for the cinematography.
Simply breathtaking work.
