Did you guys know Nickleback has a Christmas song? I just found this out. This is awful because Nickleback is awful and Christmas is awesome cause snow and lights on trees are awesome. I broke it down mathematically for you guys. Awesome = Christmas – Nickleback. Therefore Nickleback + Christmas = not awesome you guys. So I hit the old internets and came to find out that there are also a lot of really great, yet totally underrated Christmas songs. Songs you may or may not have heard before, but songs that certainly don’t get enough love. Christmas = Saved. So I put together a list of the 10 most underrated Christmas songs. Let me know if I missed anything in the comments below or by tweeting at me @danborrelli
10. NOEL SONG – ANIMANIACS
Remember when cartoons used to be really smart and clever and punny, awesome? This song is hilarious and totally gets me in the Christmas spirit of feeling like a kid again. Throw this one on the play list for sure.
9. LOUIS XIV – CHRISTMAS MIX
There’s no good video for this one, sorry about that guys. Here’s a link to it on Grooveshark, pending that’s still legal and this comes out before SOPA passes? Right? I donno.
Anyway, to give you a gist of it, it’d be like if Rocky Horror Picture Show had a Christmas jingle. These guys are bizarre but their distinct sound actually works really well with a wintery feel. You’ll have to ignore the fact that all of their other songs are about weird sex acts, but that’s what Christmas is all about…forgetting all your deviant flaws.
8. GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN – BRIGHT EYES
He can’t even record a Christmas song with out it sounding like he wants to kill an ex-girlfriend. I feel like his stocking every year just consists of anti-depressants and signed photos of Robert Smith. But you gotta give the man credit, he did make this song rock. So if you’re feeling extra angsty this year, this is a way better call than Bing Crosby. “Tiiiiidings of comfort and joyYI HATE YOU CINDY!!!!” – Bright Eyes
7. FIONA APPLE – FROSTY THE SNOWMAN
Wait, really? Yes really! She is the last person I would think to have a Christmas song, other than Bright Eyes. And it’s not just 4 minutes of her rolling around in her underwear singing about drugs. It’s really good. She has a really cool voice that you hear a lot of female singers today try and emulate, and yet we never think about her like that. This is a must play, for posterity’s sake.
6. SLEIGH RIDE – THE LATE GREATS
Yeah, I don’t know who they are either, but this song is awesome. I know it’s in that New Year’s Eve movie, which apparently isn’t a Christmas movie? Love Actually? Where am I? I give up. Anyway pitchfork probably hates it so it’s worth checking out. Plus it’s catchy as hell.
5. ALISON BRIE – SANTA BABY
I’ll just leave this here. Let’s just say this has nothing to do with the music. (Also, side note. They took this idea from a web sketch Alison Brie did before community which I thought was pretty cool.) Here's a looksie at that! You're welcome!
4. THE RAMONES – MERRY CHRISTMAS I DON’T WANT TO FIGHT TONIGHT
New York in the 70s was…well…just watch any Scorsese movie. The Ramones took pride in the fact that they sang about what life was really like for the poor urban kids of their day. And those kids had Christmases too. “Oh hey, I’m sorry, what’s that you’re hearing in this song you ask? It’s BALLS!” Also, best video ever or best video ever? - Science
3. BLINK 182 – I WONT BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Can I use the phrase nailed it here? These guys took the whole bah humbug thing and went APE [email protected] with it! It was nice every once in a while to know that there was some form of music, some other people out there who were tired of Christmas too. I love the holiday, don’t get me wrong. But there are plenty of times when I just want Christmas to go away and this song is an awesome catharsis. I’ve seriously been listening to it like 19 times on loop today.
2. LOUIS ARMSTRONG – CHRISTMAS IN NEW ORLEANS
I know he’s not exactly underrated, but I rarely hear this song in public and it’s amazing. We tend to hear a lot of his classic covers but this song just evokes really cool imagery. We often think of Christmas as being in our hometown, or some movie set in New York. But the thought of Christmas in the bayou rarely comes up. And why not? They have Christmas in the south. Maybe it’s just me, but this song seems to take the class of a 1950’s Christmas wonderland and bring it to a city that is seldom known for being calm and reflective.
1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN
You may hear this song every five minutes on the radio but it’s still underrated because it should play around the clock on the radio with it’s own radio station called 99.6 Sringsteen-is-awesome-so-suck-it FM! Since Bruce Springsteen is THE greatest musician ever forever amen, that makes this THE greatest Christmas song forever and ever in his name we pray. Christmas is about three very Springsteen-esque things; good times, partying, and partying while talking about the good times. So have a great holiday this year you guys. I hope these articles bring some good time parties to your lives. I love you all. - Science
