You know that horrible feeling you get when your Facebook friend number has dropped? All the paranoid thoughts that run through your brain... Wait I know I was at 400 last night, normally I don't pay attention to such trivial things but because it was such an even number I noticed...oh god WHAT happened?? I hope it wasn't some a-hole I was considering unfriending? No... he's still there? Who was it?? Was it something I did? WAS IT SOMETHING I DID???
Yes, yes it was something you did. You were annoying and offensive in some way. Join the club.
A new study by NM Incite has broken down all the reason we friend and unfriend, in case we didn't already know why... I guess? Here's a looksie at the data:
The number one reason is no surprise--- offensive comments. The number two reason is 'don't know well'. Seems to me if you're constantly friending people you don't know well, you're running a pretty big risk that they might be posting offensive comments. Just saying. I personally friend people because they make offensive comments. It's like having my own personal failbook blog.
Another popular reason to unfriend is because someone's trying to 'sell you something'. Yeah these people make me angry and sad at the same time, so I'd have to agree with this one. I don't wanna buy your vegan make-up/ see your unfunny improv group, The Chuckle Factory/ or see the band you put together with your half-brother and his girlfriend. Although that show would probably be funnier than anything the Chuckle Factory could whip up on the spot.
Other reasons for dumping someone include updating too much, not updating enough (WHAT IS THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF UPDATING!?!?), you don't like their friends (HOLLA!) and my personal favorite--depressing comments. Is it sad that as a society we answer these cries for help with an unfriending? No, no it isn't.
So there are lots of specific reasons why we unfriend but basically it boils down to this:
I think I'll send this card from now on so people I unfriend don't have to suffer the utter hopelessness of not knowing why. That'll help lessen the sting.
Why do you unfriend someone? Let me know @desijedeikin or in the comments below!
