10 Craziest Music Videos From The 90s

Dan Borrelli

Man the 90s were insane. I mean we accepted so much Matchbox 20 it’s not even funny. My favorite part about the 90s was the everything. But also the music videos. So I wanted to bring you the 10 craziest 90s music videos as voted on by me, @danborrelli.

10. WILL SMITH - GETTIN’ JIGGY WITH IT

We let this happen Amurrca. And now we’re gonna have to explain to our children why we thought it was awesome to not only love Will Smith movies, but Will Smith music. Of course by that time he would have been Sir President Will Smith and we will be referring to him simply as “the one.”

9. PAVEMENT – GOLD SOUNDS

Pavement is everything that was right about music in the 90s. This video totally captured the essence of the 90s. So much, “wha!?” but most of all it was fun, and they were fun. In a decade where music was either pop/dance and carefree or grungy and serious Pavement seemed to capture the best of both worlds.

8. JAMIROQUAI – VIRTUAL INSANITY

This was THE music video of the decade. So watch, learn, and reflect on a time when one’s man dancing involved solely tip-toeing around a living room the way many of us did whenever this song would come on the radio. Where’s your treadmill now OK Go!?

7. APHEX TWINS – COME TO DADDY

Pitchfork lists this as the best music video of the 90s because they’re Pitchfork and of course they do. What I love about it is there were so many other videos that were similar in tone, style, and theme? Sure, theme… It really did capture the darker, more outcast side of 90s music. And it’s creepy as sh*t!

6. FIONA APPLE - CRIMINAL

This was it you guys. Fiona Apple was what every angsty girl wanted to be and every angsty guy wanted every angsty girl to want to be. She was the real deal and this video was wildly entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Whoever wronged her made Adele’s ex-boyfriend look like a saint.

5. OUI OUI – MA MAISON

Michel Gondry is an amazing director and one of the best music video directors of all time. It all started with his work for Oui Oui. He went on to work with everyone from Bjork to the White Stripes as well as doing some movies or something I dono. But this stop motion video is certainly one of the coolest.

4. BLINK 182 – WHAT’S MY AGE AGAIN

November of ‘99. A mere 2 months before y2k happened and the machines took over and erased all our memories. #WeAreTheRobotsThatTookOver Anyway, Blink 182, or stink 182 as they were known amongst many 6th grade circles, had a lot of great videos. They often poked fun at boy bands and other pop trends at the time which made them a funny alternative for a lot of us. Plus they brought back the naked.

3. QUEEN – THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Everything about this is perfect. This was one of their last videos and it was amazing. It captured the way a lot of people felt about Queen the nearly 20 years they were popular, which was, “HUH!? I don’t know what this is and it makes me uncomfortable but man they’re amazing.” A lot of people consider Freddie Mercury to be the best rock singer ever, me included, but their videos are often overlooked. Hopefully our children’s children never forget the wtf hilarity of The Show Must Go On.

2. CIBO MATTO – SUGAR WATER

Another Gondry video, this one takes a look at something called a “split screen.?” I don’t know, if itaint 3D I aint buyin’ #ThorRules Just watch it, it’s amazing. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend II’m some expert on film and music and whatnot (I’ll save that for the next paragraph). I just think this video is cool and you guys will too. Enjoy.

1. NINE INCH NAILS - CLOSER

(source)

I legally can’t post the video on this site you guys. I’m not even kidding. It’s that bad. You can google it and it’s on youtube and if you do you’ll see why. But this took over the airwaves. This got people passionate about music videos as art again the way Peter Gabriel did in the 80s and Nickelback did in the never. It was bizarre, polarizing, and insanely creative. It’s no wonder parents hated MTV at the time. This was not only a great video visually, but a testament to the power that one 3 minute video can have. Something often echoed by the enormous reach of the internet.
