Using his blog, Markus “Notch” Persson has asked the players of Minecraft on their views on gathering minimal, anonymous data on their gaming session.
Currently, only minimal information is gathered from players; essentially that of when your account logs into the game session. To better understand his playing audience, he is now looking to expand upon this. He is proposing minimal information to be anonymously harvested – ranging from your Operating System and game client type, to how long you stay and play. Of specific interest is the request to send this information every ten minutes or so.
Certainly, the information being gathered is hardly as significant as that already performed by Steam, Origin and other games. According to the poll being run, a significant majority have responded in the positive, however some users have raised concerns over this proposal. We would recommend our Minecrafting readers to head on over to his blog post and vote accordingly.
In case you’ve been living under a block-shaped rock, Minecraft is a sandbox building/adventure game. Written and designed by Markus “Notch” Persson, it is now developed by his company, Mojang. Released in an alpha state in May 2009, it is now available for all PC platforms using Java, as well as on the iOS and Android platforms. A release for the Xbox 360 with Kinect support is currently under development, to be released sometime in 2012.
Thanks, Joystiq.
