The 5 Biggest Stories Coming out of San Diego Comic Con!

Mikey McCollor

This weekend was the annual San Diego Comic Con, and at this point it's so big that everything from movies to TV shows to video games are almost required to have a panel to remain culturally relevant. I'm honestly shocked Mitt Romney didn't hold a panel to announce his nominee for Vice President and then stick around for a Q&A and answer fan questions about how Venom is going to return to the Ultimate universe. But here are some big stories that did come out of this year's San Diego Comic Con:

Man of Steel

Director Zach Snyder screened some footage of his upcoming Superman film for the crowd, which reportedly has a darker, Batman Begins-esque tone. Which is awesome, because Batman Begins is rad. Every movie should have a Batman Begins-esque tone. I'd be happy if the next Ice Age movie featured that stupid rat thing growing a beard as he trains all around the world, demanding to know where are the drugs.

Marvel announces "Phase Two"

There were a bunch of new movies announced by Marvel to set up Avengers 2, but they kind of blew their load with the last one, so they're going to add, like, the Guardians of the Galaxy. Who are the Guardians of the Galaxy? Do comic nerds even know who they are? I've never heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy and I literally haven't kissed a girl in years.

On the more bright side, we were given confirmation that Edgar Wright, director of Shawn of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, will be directing Ant-Man, which is maybe the best news to come out of any convention ever, including all the conventions that significantly decreased the number of nuclear weapons in the world.

Godzilla

Did you even know there was a new Godzilla movie in the works? That feels like something we would've heard of. But the biggest surprise was that they got Gwenyth Paltrow to do the voice of Godzilla, who at first seems like a waste of money since Godzilla does nothing but growl and screech. But then you think about it for a second and it's like, yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn

IMicrosoft unveiled a three minute trailer for its live action Halo 4 prequel Forward Unto Dawn, and somehow, the title wasn't the most awkward part. For two and a half minutes, we see a real-world military base with nothing too sci-fi going on and then all of a sudden there's this explosion and a big goofy Master Chief walks in. And everyone is just okay with it. Like, if I didn't know up top that this was a Halo thing it would have been terrifying. I loved watching Power Rangers but if Zordon had suddenly shown up at my house I would have definitely shot him on sight.

Some comic books were talked about for a minute

DC announced some more "New 52" titles, Neil Gaiman is working on some more "Sandman" comics, and also whatever. Comic-Con hasn't been about comics for like a decade. For real, if you walk around the show floor, there are like seven comics in the back tossed on a coffee table like magazines at a dentist's office, and one of them is a Batman Forever coloring book.
