NBA 2K13 cover star Kevin Durant led his team to Olympic gold in London this year, but are they as awesome as the 1992 Dream team? My backwards cap says “no”.
2K Sports has announced a partnership with USA Basketball to feature both the 2012 London Olympics team and the 1992 Dream Team in NBA 2K13.
Apparently, the idea to get both of these teams on board came from the game’s celebrity executive producer.
“Letting fans go head to head with these legendary USA teams was extremely important to JAY Z,” said 2K marketing dude Jason Argent said in a statement.
“We are excited to partner with USA Basketball, and share in JAY Z’s enthusiasm in making this a reality in NBA 2K13.”
Olympic captain Durant, who scored 30 points in the finals against Spain, seems pretty chuffed by the inclusion.
“It was an incredible blessing to have been part of the 2012 USA Basketball National Team/ USA Basketball’s National Team legacy is incredible and so many of basketball’s all-time greats have been part of it, I’m just honored to be in that group. Like everybody, I can’t wait to see how our squad stacks up against the 1992 team in NBA 2K13,” he said.
So let’s talk about the Dream Team. For those who came in late, the 1992 squad was packed with Hall of Fame members, including the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, David Robinson and Charles Barkley, whom even you whippersnappers out to have heard of.
“The fantasy matchup between the legendary 1992 ‘Dream Team’ and the 2012 USA Men’s national team has become one of the greatest sports debates of our time,” JAY Z said.
“In NBA 2K13, we’re giving fans the opportunity to play as two of the best teams ever assembled in sporting history, literally putting the debate right into their hands.”
Well, this is beautiful madness indeed. NBA 2K13 is due on October 2 in the US and October 5 elsewhere, for PC, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360, with a Wii U version to follow “during the holiday season”.
