Wheel of Time games headed to mobile, more through Kickstarter

Red Eagle Games has announced plans for a whole series of officially licensed Wheel of Time games.

Robert Jordan fans will be pleased to learn that the game plans have the official nod from the author’s estate.

“Red Eagle Games has the right to make Wheel of Time games through rights originally granted by Robert Jordan and his successors. Harriet [Jordan, the writer’s widow] will be consulting with us on the development of the game,” Red Eagle’s Larry Mondragon told VG247.

Independent developer Red Eagle Games has some top talent onboard, including veterans of the Command & Conquer series, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth and more recently, mobile strategy effort Highborn. Its partnered with Jet Set Games, another indie team, for this project.

The pair of companies has serious ambitions for Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series, and expects eventually to deliver triple-A level games set during the events of the Age of Legends. On the way, it expects to deliver a numer of social and mobile titles including The White Tower: Book of Novices, The Colonization of Seanchan, 100 Years of Kings, and The Trolloc Wars.

However, for now, its focusing on a series of turn-based strategy games for Android and iOS set during the Aiel War, beginning with First Banner of the Rising Sun. The project’s description is below:

“Twenty years ago, an enigmatic warrior people from the desolate eastern wastelands sent a great force west across the mountains known as the Dragonwall beginning three years of blood soaked chaos. So began the Aiel War, a conflict that saw the birth of the Dragon and the legends that would shape events for a new age. The early days of that war were marked by a great siege, a battle that saw the destruction of Cairhien, capital of one of the world’s greatest nations. This is the story of those desperate days, and of the heroes of the First Banner of the Rising Sun; a ragtag unit of old soldiers and stable boys pressed to defend the people of Cairhien, city and nation, from the onslaught of the savage Aielmen. Take command of the soldiers and heroes in First Banner of the Rising Sun and lead them into battle against an army made up of the greatest warriors in the world. Follow the exploits of the Banner as they grow from a motley assortment of ruffians to one of the most highly honored units of the Aiel War.”

Inorder to remain independent, the teams have taken to Kickstarter to try and assist in funding development. Check out the pitch video below.

Thanks, GamesIndustry.
