To celebrate the premiere of two new Shut Up! Cartoons this week, we're celebrating CARTOON WEEK on Smosh.com! Don't forget to subscribe!
Memes are everywhere. We use them to express ourselves in humorous ways, we overshare them on Facebook....but where do they come from??? Some of the most popular memes come from some of the most popular cartoons....which should come as no surprise. Here's a look at the origin of 5 memes based on memorable cartoon moments.
No, This Is Patrick--Spongebob Squarepants
This phrase was first said by doofus extraordinaire Patrick Star on the Spongebob Squarepants episode Big Pink Loser. Instant meme magic! It really is the perfect smartass response to anyone asking what anything is. And who would think the word smart would ever be associated with Patrick Star? Maybe he's actually a secret genius? Is this possible? No, this is Patrick.
I Don't Want To Live On This Planet Anymore--Futurama
Of all the memes on this list, this is the sentiment I feel the most. This moment comes from the Futurama episode A Clockwork Origin. It's what Professor Farnsworth utters when he realizes his discovery of Homo Farnsworth actually disproves the Theory of Evolution. This is a phrase I often utter when watching any reality show that takes place in New Jersey or when Amanda Bynes crashes into another parked car. In fact I uttered it just this morning when I read that Lindsay Lohan had the FRIGGIN' nerve to criticize Amanda Bynes for her law-breaking ways. SMH.
Super Cool Ski Instructor--South Park
The super cool ski instructor, Thumper, first appears on the South Park episode Asspen. It is during a ski lesson that he repeatedly warns his students that kind of obviously dangerous behavior on the slopes will lead to having a bad time. Cut to the internet quickly adding to the list of other things that will lead you to having a bad time. Which includes pretty much everything that idiots do after saying YOLO.
Dinkleberg!---Fairly Oddparents
'Dinkleberg!' is a catchphrase used by the Dad on Fairly Oddparents. In his mind, anything and everything that goes wrong probably has to with his happy and successful neighbor Dinkleberg. It's kind of like the cartoon version of Seinfeld saying 'Newman!'. Basically anything bad that's ever happened in the world can be blamed on Dinkleberg. Holocaust? Dinkleberg. Snooki's birth control fail? Dinkleberg. My unsuccessful attempts at selling a screenplay? Dinkleberg. Ahhh... it feels much better blaming someone else for my failures.
Derpy Hooves---My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
Derpy Hooves was nothing but a background pony in the premiere episode of the uber popular pony cartoon. But fans on 4chan for some reason instantly latched onto the herp derp pony. Creator Lauren Faust claimed that the derp eyes was just an animation error, but by that point fans were obsessed. As obsessed with Derpy as she is with muffins. Soon she was the meme-iest pony out there. Faust took note. In January 2012, Derpy became a part of the pony canon. Bronies everywhere cried with joy. And then took out there fleshlights and 'paid tribute'. I kid, I kid.
