Have you watched many of the entertainments you enjoyed as a child? A little while ago, a girlfriend of mine bought me season one of the original “Transformers” on DVD. Man, it was really bad. Like, as bad as we’re going to look back realize LOST was. But not every formerly beloved cartoon’s legacy is so grim. In fact, a lot of shows have actually aged quite well. Here are 7 Cartoons That Do Hold Up:
Teddy Ruxpin
With weird crystals, crazy hermits who might be someone’s Father, and some attempts at original art direction, Teddy Ruxpin is probably the most embarrassing cartoon you could still potentially be entertained by, but this is like LOST for four year-olds. I know what I just said about LOST being bad, but when it comes to children’s entertainment, a heaping of complexity is often a good thing.
Earthworm Jim
Based on a video game, this cartoon shatters the expectations of the crap you normally expect from something that’s “based on a video game”. It employs the kind manic energy and dumb jokes that translates well across all generations.
Ducktales
Literally one of the best shows ever seen on television. Although, as you get older, you realize Scrooge would have been crushed alive the first time he tried to swim in all those gold coins.
Batman: The Animated Series
A show that was often a better representation of the character than the comic books he was based on, the show had award winning art direction, perfect voice acting, and everyone’s second favorite interpretation of the joker. Also, one character created for the show, Harley Quinn, was so popular she became a regular in the comics.
Gargoyles
If you can get passed how weird it is that the central love story is between a mythical figure who spends half the day made of stone and an NYPD detective, this is another show with a great narrative, that return to storylines originally introduced in seasons before. I like ongoing narratives, damn it!
X-Men
Like B:taS, X-Men was a part of the era where cartoons really nailed their comic book sources. Some of the voice acting on this show can be a little embarrassing, but they do a great job of touching on most of the major “X” stories, and unlike Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, this one doesn’t spend half the show weeping.
The Tick
This show is amazing. It’s “hold up” really well, because an incredibly large portion of the jokes will fly over the head of your average child (probably had something to do with its brief run on TV). The ultimate super hero spoof, it’s just unbelievably hilarious. I’m literally not going to finish this article so I can go watch it.
