Marriage proposals should be sweet, a grand display of how much one partner cares for the other. They can be messages displayed on the ballpark's Jumbotron, written in the clouds, or even hidden in the couple's favorite board game.
"Honey, this is sweet and all, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to deduct
14 points for use of an unofficial tile."

But one thing they should never be is absolutely terrifying. But somehow, that's the route Russian billionaire Alexey Bykov took when proposing to his girlfriend, Irena Kolokov. Bykov had arranged to meet Kolokov at a specific place, but when she arrived, there was destruction—smashed cars, ambulances, fire. And to top it off, Bykov himself lying in the middle of the road, bleeding and wounded. “Then when I saw Alexey covered in blood lying in the road, a paramedic told me he was dead and I just broke down in tears.” But suddenly, he shot up, awake, alive, and ready to take the next step in their relationship.
"Sweetheart, I'm fine, if slightly psychotic."

"I wanted her to realize how empty her life would be without me and how life would have no meaning without me," Bykov explained. And somehow, it worked. Kolokov said yes, and the two were married that week. I imagine the couple will enjoy many happy years together, with Bykov proving to Kolokov again and again how wonderful it is living a life where her nightmares don't come true by making all of her nightmares come true.
"I locked her in a room with a bunch of snakes so she could see
how much better her life is with me than with a bunch of snakes."

People who do these kinds of "Haha, isn't it funny to scare you before I do something nice for you" jokes are riddled with insecurity. My mom used to do it. As I hunted my Easter basket, she'd cackle and say "Maybe you didn't get an Easter basket this year!" This is an insecure person's way of telling you "even when I do something nice for you, you musn't forget how I can hurt you." It's like pulling the feathers off a baby bird—eventually they'll be in so much pain they'll be thankful for just the warmth of your hand.
Or your marraige proposal.
