Humans Must Answer is a new side-scrolling, 2D space shooter in development at Sumom Games, the Kiev-based studio comprised of ex-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers.
Formed by Denis Matveenko and Eugeny Yatsuk when GSC Game World were forced to postpone development on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, the duo formed Sumom Games with an aspiration to “create interesting, challenging and original games” which combine elements from some of their favorite genres.
“Knowing that we were going to be laid off, we prepared by starting to make our own game and teaching ourselves how to program,” said studio co-founder Eugeny Yatsuk. “We were happy to do so, as we didn’t want to be cogs in the mechanism any more, but to oversee and work on every aspect of a game.
“It was difficult for us to take this step when we previously had a job with a salary and all. It was quite scary actually, but the GSC layoffs provided the impulse that pushed us to start doing what we really wanted to do.”
In Humans Must Answer, players take on the role of a pilot on board a Scout ship called The Golden Eagle, manned by a crew of “intelligent and dangerous chickens.”
After discovering the Solar System in which we humans reside, the fowl attempt to establish contact and are surprised when the encounter turns hostile.
The intergalactic chickens press onward towards the Sun, and on their journey they encounter many peculiarities in a bizarre future where no mercy is shown to fleets of humans and robots “that dare stand in their way.”
Humans Must Answer has an emphasis on evading dangers, hidden bonuses, boss fights and an upgrade and points system. Placing “temporary turrets and experimenting with different weapons is a must” in order to pass through planetary defenses.
Features:
- Eye popping explosions and a spectacular destruction system.
- Combine weapons to devastating effect and deploy drone turrets.
- Subtle and surprising narrative that is integrated into the gameplay.
- Shop with a large number of upgrades for the ship and weapons.
- Tough boss battles that require thought as well as quick reactions.
- Secrets to discover and hidden eggs to collect but often at a risk.
Humans Must Answer has an alpha demo which has been submitted to IGF 2012 and is available for players to upvote on Steam Greenlight.
A public demo will be released further into development. It’s slated for release in 2013 on PC.
