10 Actually Good Holiday Songs

Zach Ames

There are way too many terrible holiday songs. There are so many that multiple radio stations will switch to an all Christmas format during December. Unfortunately, there are a ton of great Christmas songs that never get played. If you're going to have any sort of a decent Holiday season, you want to have a good playlist. Nobody wants to hear the same lame songs that are played in rotation all season long. Here are actually good holiday songs.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Darlene Love

You may recognize this song from Gremlins and Goodfellas. You also may recognize this as being blasted out of my car as a drive around during the holidays. It's probably a good thing that it's only seasonal because I would probably play it all year round.

Things I Want - Tenacious D and Sum 41 (NSFW)

This song is basically just the song version of the most awesome Christmas list ever written. Ever since this song came out, I've just copied this list and sent it to Santa in my yearly letter. I've gotten over half of them in the last few years. This year I'm really hoping for the statue of Moby on the sun. I plan on sneaking into the old haunted observatory on Christmas day so I can see if it's there.

All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey, Jimmy Fallon, and The Roots

If you aren't filled with joy while you watch this video then you probably don't have a soul. It's pretty common for people to take sort of lame songs and make an awesome cover of it. It's rare when that own artist covers their song and makes it better. This is one of those cases and it's mostly because of The Roots. I think ?uestlove might be Santa Claus.

2000 Miles - The Pretenders

2000 Miles sounds like a pretty song about two lovers who are in a long distance relationship. It's really about the unexpected death of one of their former members. You can put this on your holiday playlist, but just make sure you don't tell everyone what it's really about cause then you're going to have to deal with a bunch of crying. The holidays can get people really emotional. I guess that's why I consider every day to be a holiday for me.

The Night Santa Went Crazy - Weird Al

Weird Al is legitimately one of my favorite artists. People only know him for his parody songs, but he actually has a lot of sweet deep cuts. His albums always have several originals that are just as good if not better than the more well known parody songs. Ugh. I just realized I'm getting kind of music snobby about Weird Al. Seriously though you guys! DEEP CUTS!!

Mary - Lou Barlow

This song is a great one to play if you're trying to offend your grand parents at your holiday party. I know I play it every year at my Robanukah Celebration.. But you know what? It's my party and I'll blaspheme if I want to.

Merry Christmas, Baby(I Don't Want To Fight Tonight) - The Ramones

The Ramones made a Christmas song. The lyrics of the song were written by Joey Ramone who is Jewish which doesn't make a ton of sense. Hopefully it inspired some people to stop fighting and make up for Christmas. I'm sure it did make them a lot of money.

Christmastime In Hell - South Park (NSFW)

A lot of people were shocked by how awesome The Book Of Mormon musical is. They had no idea that the South Park guys could write music. Anyone that is a real fan of the series knows that they've been writing great original music for years. This isn't their only Christmas song. They had a whole episode of Christmas songs. It was really hard to choose which one was the best, but this was the only one that featured a chorus of the damned.

The Little Drummer Boy - Bing Crosby and David Bowie

This is probably the most traditional song on this list. It's not really that special. What makes it so special is who is singing it. These two are probably one of the least likely pairs of people to come together to duet on a song. I kind of doubt there was a lot of hanging out on the set. Bing had to get back to his family and David Bowie has to go hop on his unicorn and fly it to his space station.

Super Mario's Sleighride - OC ReMix

A pretty proven mathematical formula for my enjoyment level is Mario + Anything = Awesome. I should know because I'm really good at math. I got through most of a semester in college as an Accounting major.
