Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance would have been “very dull” without stealth, says Inaba

Stealth was added back into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, according to Platinum’s Atsushi Inaba, because the game would have been “very dull” if it were just non-stop action gameplay.

Speaking with Shack, Inaba said things would have gotten boring quick if the game were just “centered around just cutting.”

“In the beginning, we wrapped around the core concept of just having Raiden moving forward,” said Inaba answered. “It was based on sole action. But looking back, it would have been very dull and very centered around just cutting.

“We think that players would [have] just given up on it, so we needed to have more options and variety and that’s when we decided to include a lot more stealth and different routes where players can really flex on their play style.”

In the game, Raiden will constantly moving forward so any enemy attacks can be parried instead of blocked. This way, he is always on the offensive.

“Having Raiden moving forward, we never want him blocking or moving sideways in order to defend himself,” said Inaba. “We always want him on the offensive. So when he moves and parries something, it connects to his next combo.

“As a character and as the concept, we wanted to keep in line with that.”

MGR: Revengeance is out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013.
