League of Legends Season 3 will abandon the single-ladder system of previous years to focus on leagues, providing a greater sense of progression than when you were ranked 8,457,655th behind people who live in a mansion playing MOBAs for a living.
Under the new system, players will be divided into leagues and divisions, and earn points to progress through winning ranked matches – much like StarCraft 2.
Being promoted through divisions and leagues will apparently be rewarded at the end of the season, as well as letting you face tougher opponents, and top 5v5 ranked teams that reach the Challenger tier even have the opportunity to go pro in Season 3.
You have to be level 30 with at least 16 champions to take part in ranked play. A lengthy FAQ on Riot’s website, and the infographic below, explain the new system in greater detail.
Riot has a major patch in the works prior to the new season’s kick off, with a lot of balancing changes. Check out a preview video below and don’t forget to rage out about how your favourite champion has been nerfed while an obviously OP rival has been buffed.
League of Legends Season 2 concluded late last year. Professional events for Season 3 will begin after the balancing patch has been issued, but Riot has not yet confirmed dates.
