It's pretty shocking to discover that some of the biggest artists ever hate their own songs, especially when they are some of the most iconic tracks ever recorded! Some hate isn't that shocking, but you have to wonder why they inflicted that crap on us in the first place! (I'm looking at you Cyrus!) Here's 7 artists who hate one of their most popular songs
Miley Cyrus--Party In The USA
Miley made headlines when she demanded that a DJ NOT play her best-charted single ever. Don't hate Miley enough? Read this: "I listen to zero pop music, which is really weird for someone who makes pop music. My 13-year-old self would have beaten up my 17-year-old self because she would be like, 'You're a sellout!'" Oh, Miley you're so punk rock. She pretty much claims that she hates all of her music. I guess I finally have something in common with Miley Cyrus!
NIrvana--Smells Like Teen Spirit
Cobain once told Rolling Stone that it was "almost an embarrassment to play it ... Everyone has focused on that song so much." He considered it a total sell out. He must of barrel-rolled over in his grave when he heard Miley's cover!
Beastie Boys--Fight For Your Right To Party
In the liner notes of The Sounds of Science the Boys proclaim that this song "sucks. " Mike D has famously complained that all the d-bags who are fist-pumping and singing along "were oblivious to the fact that it was a goof on them." I love the Beasie Boys but I agree. This song is what a dude wearing Ed Hardy thinks is punk.
Guns N Roses--Sweet Child O Mine
Seriously? The opening guitar riff on this is one of the most reognizable EVER. Slash couldn't stand it. "It was a fluke," admits Slash. "I was sitting around making funny faces and acting like an idiot and played that riff. Izzy started playing the chords that I was playing, strumming them, and all of a sudden Axl really liked it. I hated that song because it was so stupid at first. I hated the guitar part. Now it's more love. But there was hate." I love this song. I only hate it when some drunk dude who looks like an ex-roadie murders it in a bad way at a Karaoke bar.
Madonna--Like A Virgin
Madonna says she can't ever see singing this tune again. "I'm not sure I can sing 'Holiday' or 'Like a Virgin' ever again," she told New York radio station Z100. "I just can't -- unless somebody paid me, like, $30 million or something. [Like if] some Russian guy wants me to come to the wedding he's going to have to a 17-year-old, you know?" She doesn't say why, but I'm guessing it has to do with the straight-up hilarity of a 50+ year old Madonna singing anything with the word virgin in it. It would be WAY too parody-esque. That being said, I wanna see it happen. Come on Russian dude marrying a child bride! Pony up the dough! Make it happen!
Vanilla Ice--Ice, Ice Baby
How you gonna hate your only hit?! Vanilla Ice hated this track so much that in 1999, he went to MTV to smash the network’s master copy of the video and then tore up the set like he was Chris Brown or something. Then he slide into oblivion, his legacy... a rap song so easy your grandma could do it justice. Nothing pisses me off more than when I think Under Pressure's about to start and it's this song instead.
Led Zeppelin- Stairway To Heaven
I knew we were all sick of hearing our doofus cousin play it lamely on the electric guitar, but who wouldn't enjoy hearing Led Zep perform it?? Well, lead singer Robert Plant for one. "I'd break out in hives if I had to sing that song in every show. I wrote those lyrics and found that song to be of some importance and consequence in 1971, but 17 years later, I don't know. It's just not for me." WHA??? Perhaps he's taking that 'NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN' sign in the movie Wayne's World too seriously! It was JOKE, Robert!
Were you surprised by any of these? Who are some other artists you've heard hate their own songs? Let me know @desijedeikin or in the comments below!
