EVE Online to adopt Bittorrent protocol in launcher client

By Phil Owen

Seeking to find a way to prevent users from experiencing corrupted downloads for the EVE Online client, CCP is going to give Bittorrent a go. The file-sharing take should make downloads more efficient.

Despite what you might have heard, Bittorrent is good for more than just downloading porn. The key feature of the tech, actually, is not its file-sharing capabilities but rather the way it downloads items. it breaks the download into a bunch of tiny pieces and passes them along in whatever order is most convenient before rebuilding it after it’s down. This can help reduce corruptions because if one does occur the client cant just redownload that particular piece or pieces instead of the whole thing.

But, yes, CCP’s Bittorrent client will enable file-sharing, but you will default to only share when the launcher is open and downloading files. It won’t hog up your upload bandwidth unless you want it to.

CCP will start testing out the client in a few weeks.

Thanks, PCGamesN
