Blizzard has revealed its new title in the works at PAX East, and it’s a free-to-play affair called HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft.
The firm wasn’t lying when it said back in February it would be revealing “a little something, different from our other games,” at the event.
The free-to-play game is a turn-based, online collectable card game where said cards are placed on a virtual table, like many other games in the genre, but Blizzard said it will be more in-depth than other CCG games on the market.
“We’ve always loved collectible card games at Blizzard, so it’s been exciting to bring everything we love about the genre to life in Hearthstone,” said Mike Morhaime, Blizzard CEO and co-founder. “We’re putting a lot of focus into creating a fun new game that’s easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
Various cards will be available for purchase, and at present the packs will cost around $1 each. This may change though.
The game will make use of Battle.net, and players can challenge each other in two competitive game modes.
“Play Mode” features traditional head-to-head battles, with players facing off for a chance to increase their medal ranking and earn card packs along the way.
“The Forge” has players starting each match by building a deck from a new set of cards, and then use that deck to duel other Forge participants.
A release date was not provided, but upon release it will land on PC, Mac, and iPad.
A beta will launch this summer. Looking for Hearthstone strategies? We’ve got you covered.
