Ron Gilbert has said he likes working on mobile games because the smaller teams feel a bit like the development environment of his early career.
“I really love the mobile game space quite a bit. I think it’s a very vibrant and very dynamic space right now,” the Monkey Island creator told Eurogamer.
“I think one of the reasons is because you can have these very small development teams working on stuff. They don’t take hundreds of people or even twenty people to put stuff together. You can get these very small teams of people to put stuff together and that’s really interesting to me.
“That’s really how I started out in this business, working on very, very small projects. Maniac Mansion was basically three people. It was me and Gary Winnick and David Fox and that was it,” he added.
Gilbert cited his love for independence and small teams as part of his motivation for leaving Double Fine.
“I’ve always liked small teams. There’s just something about this very small group of people. You kind of become this one brain and everybody just knows everything that’s going on and you’re all just completely thinking along the same lines. And I’ve always found that very energising,” he said.
Gilbert is currently working on Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG, for iOS. The full interview through the link above contains further discussion on why Gilbert left Double Fine and his new project.
